Thierry, 97, plays his violin as Ashley
Holder, a caretaker with Trinity In-Home
Care, listens. Holder visits Thierry
three times a week to wash dishes, sweep
and help keep Thierry company at his
Lawrence home, where he lives with his
daughter, Daphne Payne, who is 70. Holder’s
services, provided through the Jayhawk
Area Agency on Aging, allow Thierry
to stay out of a nursing home.

Thierry
is 97 years
old. He lives with his daughter, Daphne Payne.
She’s 70.
“I can do most things to
take care of him,” said Payne, a retired
Lawrence teacher. “But I had a light stroke
in January of 2005, so sometimes I get a little
tired and I need a little help.”
That’s where Jayhawk Area
Agency on Aging comes in.
“Our goal is to keep people
out of nursing homes and in their own homes
for as long as possible,” said Jocelyn
Lyons, a management team leader at Jayhawk AAA,
which coordinates services for senior citizens
in Shawnee, Jefferson and Douglas counties.
