Meal & NutritionPrograms
There are several programs available to ensure every Kansas senior has their daily nutritional needs met.

"Meals on Wheels" & Home-Delivered Meal Programs
Home-delivered meals are available in many Kansas communities to individuals who have been determined to meet established eligibility criteria. Meals are nutritious and tasty and are delivered by volunteers. Frozen or "shelf-stable" meals requiring minimal preparation may be available in some areas. Some services deliver two meals daily, but most deliver only one. Special diets may be available to those who need them.

For more information call JAAA (785) 235-1367 or the KS Department on Aging at 800-432-3535

Nutrition and/or Meal Sites
Nutrition or Meal Sites offer lunch programs for people 60 years and older and their spouses. Nutrition programs can be found at some Senior Centers, or they may be located in community centers or churches. A donation is suggested for meals, but is not a condition for receiving a meal. Spouses regardless of age can also receive a meal on a contribution basis.

KS Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program
Through the Kansas Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program low-income seniors in 10 counties are provided $30 of checks to exchange for eligible, locally-grown foods at farmers' markets or roadside stands. Due to limited funding, the program is only being implemented in Atchison, Douglas, Johnson, Lyon, Reno, Riley, Saline, Sedgwick, Shawnee and Wyandotte counties. Some low-income seniors (i.e., homebound) in three of these counties are provided three $10 bundles of eligible, locally-grown foods by community supported agriculture farms instead of the checks.

For more information contact JAAA or call KS Department on Aging at 800-432-3535.

Food Stamps
The Food Stamps program issues benefits for the purchase of food. All participants are issued a plastic Vision card which is used at stores. From $10- $149 for an eligible single person or from $10 to $274 for an eligible couple may be available.

Eligibility is based on income. Deductions from gross income are used to determine a household's Net income.

For more information contact JAAA or Kansas SRS. or visit their website at www.srs.kansas.org

Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)
USDA Food Commodities are distributed through the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). This food is for home consumption for the needy under 130% of the Federal poverty level (the same as Food Stamps). TEFAP has been increased with welfare reform to serve as a safety net.

For income guidelines and more information contact JAAA or SRS.
