Agency gives seniors freedom
Excerpt from Topeka
Capital-Journal article
by Ann Marie Bush

Topeka — Thanks to Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Inc., Midland Hospice and Hall's daughter, Regina, the 78-year-old now enjoys spending time with other seniors. And, happily, her daughter adds, Hall can be found on her front porch in the morning before it gets too hot.

Hall shared her story during the agency's Independence Visit on Tuesday morning. About 20 people, including Shawnee County Commission Chairman Vic Miller and several legislators, gathered at the agency, 2910 S.W. Topeka Blvd., to hear an overview of its services.

Regina Hall said she has benefited from the agency, too. She attends a monthly caregiver support group the fourth Wednesday of every month at RoseHill Place Clubhouse, 3600 S.W. Gage Blvd., No. 97. The meeting, facilitated by Senior Outreach Services in cooperation with the agency, is open to the public.

Digital Television Transition ARE YOU READY?

What is the digital television transition?
February 17, 2009, television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.
What is the TV Converter Box Coupon Program?
Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after February 17, 2009. The Program allows U.S. households to obtain up to two coupons, each worth $40, that can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes.
A TV connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service does not require a TV converter box from this program.

Consumers have a variety of options. Options to explore include:
Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box. A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after Feb. 17, 2009, or
Connect to cable, satellite or other pay service, or
Purchase a television with a digital tuner. Click HERE to find out more about the digital television transition. Information provided to you by The TV Converter Box Coupon Program at www.dtv2009.gov or call 1.888.388.2009 or TTY contact 1.877.530.264

Medicare (SHICK) Training- August 26-28, 2008

People with Medicare often have questions about health insurance, but all too frequently they have limited resources to obtain objective information. To help with these needs, Congress created State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs). Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) is the SHIP for Kansas and Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging is the SHICK Sponsoring Organization for Shawnee and Jefferson counties. SHICK educates the public and assists consumers on topics related to Medicare and health insurance so they can make informed decisions.

The addition of Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D) to Medicare in 2006 has substantially increased the need for trained SHICK volunteers and community partners. Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers to assist during the Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Period (November 15 through December 31), as well as year round assistance in the call center for the SHICK hotline on Mondays and Fridays. Volunteers for open enrollment will assist customers with comparisons of Medicare Part D plans, explanation of benefits, and assistance with enrollment in a Part D plan. Call center volunteers are responsible for assisting callers with questions as well as screening and routing calls to the correct SHICK coordinator for the county in which the call originates.

All volunteers will receive a free three day extensive training on Medicare, Medicare Supplement Insurance, Long Term Care, and other health insurance subjects. Training dates are August 26, 27, and 28. Please contact Janell Collins, SHICK Coordinator, at Jayhawk area Agency on Aging to reserve your seat in this training.

Congratulations to Virginia Tevis of Topeka, Kansas! Virginia is the recipient of the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging's 2008 Donna Kidd Award!

A retired nurse, Virginia has always felt the call to volunteer, sharing her expertise in medicine with friends and family in order to help others. “She strives to make other welcome and is always willing to help,” said JoAnn Mzhickteno, member of the Shawnee County Advocacy Council on Aging:“This term [she] was appointed to her position on the Council by the Shawnee County Commissioners in January, 2000, works with the County Service Program for the Elderly funding for 16 agencies, supporting 20 programs. Virginia is a member of the Grant Review Committee, responsible for awarding grants of approximately $600,000 annually. Each council member is responsible as a liaison to one of the funded agencies. Virginia is the liaison for Let’s Help." The Donna J. Kidd Award is based upon outstanding advocacy and service for seniors in recognition of someone who is “Making a Difference”. Donna Kidd had been the first Executive Director for the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging serving Shawnee, Douglas and Jefferson counties and remained in that position for twenty years. Mrs. Kidd was one of the founders as well as the first Executive Director of “Doorstep, Inc.”, whose mission is to provide short-term emergency services to Topeka area individuals and families in need. She was elected and served as a former National Silver-Haired Legislator. The Silver-Haired Legislators are challenged in advocating for elders’ interests at a national level. Mrs. Kidd served as the Chairperson of the Shawnee County Advocacy Council on Aging. The Advocacy Council acts as an advocate on behalf of the senior population in Shawnee County, making recommendations for aging mill levy funds to the county commissioners. The award was established to honor Mrs. Donna Kidd and to hold future recipients to this high standard she upheld.
