Medicare meets some hospital
and medical costs. Medicare is a three-part health
insurance program administered by the Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It is designed
to meet some of the hospital, medical, and prescription
costs of senior citizens (age 65 or older) and some
disabled persons under age 65.

A
Hospital Insurance
You may be eligible if you
fit into one of the following three categories:
- You are 65 or older and qualify
for Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits;
or
- You are disabled and have met the
Social Security disability requirements for two
years; or
- You are a kidney patient with end-stage
renal disease
Medicare
- Part
B
Medical Insurance
You are eligible for Part B if:
- You are 65 or older; or
- Under 65 and disabled; or
- You are a kidney patient with end-stage
renal disease
AND
- You are a citizen of the United
States or a legal resident for five consecutive
years.
There is a monthly premium for all
enrolled people with Medicare unless they qualify
for one of the MSP's (Medicare Savings Program).

Prescription
Drug Coverage
Everyone with Medicare is eligible
for this coverage, regardless of income, resources,
health status, or current prescription expenses.
Joining a Medicare plan that helps cover prescription
drugs is voluntary. if you want coverage, you must
choose to join a plan to receive it. Just
like any other insurance, if you choose not to join
when you are first eligible and later change your
mind, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty.
If you have limited income
and resources, extra help may be available to help
you pay for your coverage.
